From 1928 he lived in Moscow, worked at the Trekhgorny manufactory, studied at the music school and at the Moscow Conservatory under PG Chesnokov, A.V. Aleksandrov, N.M. Danilin. During the Great Patriotic War at the front, he fought on the Pulkovo Heights, participated in the breakthrough of the Leningrad blockade, twice seriously wounded. Two brothers Sandler died at the front, the father - in the Jewish ghetto of Vitebsk.
After demobilization, he completed his studies at the Leningrad Conservatory in the class of G. Dmitrevsky, at the same time led the choir of cadets of the Naval Medical Academy. In 1949 he created the choir of the Leningrad University, which he directed until the end of his life. In 1954, he became artistic director of the Leningrad Television and Radio Choir, which he led until 1987. This choir recorded more than 20 Russian and world music records of a capella, including “12 choruses to poems by Y. Polonsky” by S. Taneyev, “10 poems” by D. Shostakovich, “Petersburg Serenades” by A. Dargomyzhsky, “The Pugachev's Execution” , “Strophes of Eugene Onegin” and other works of R. Shchedrin, choruses of G. Sviridov, V. Kalinnikov, A. Arensky, P. Chesnokov, M. Koval, B. Kravchenko, V. Salmanov, Y. Falik, French, German composers , Russian folk songs, songs of the peoples of the world.
The foundation of all the achievements of Sandler's choirs - emotionality, expressiveness, slimness, unity of voices, beautiful sounding - was his constant careful vocal work with performers. He was a great interpreter of choral compositions and a great artist. He captured the chorus with his inner state and the works he performed to the depth of the soul touched the audience. The genre of singing a capella is the main genre to which Sandler dedicated his activities. In the a capella repertoire of the choral master there is an immense range of stylistic traditions: from folk songs, choral classics of old writing, baroque, classicism, romanticism to modern music, the first performer of which was very often Sandler. In 1986, for the first time in history, the choir of the Leningrad Radio and Television, conducted by Sandler, performed the entirely famous op.27 S. Taneyev - 12 choirs to poems by Y. Polonsky. The uniqueness of the university choir consisted in the fact that Sandler raised the performing skills of an amateur, annually renewed group to a highly professional level, the student choir could perform choral compositions of any difficulty.
